Optimizing Fertility utilizing Chinese Medicine combined with Nutritional and Dietary Therapy: An integrative and holistic approach aimed at enhancing reproductive potential

The road to conceiving a child can be difficult for patients suffering from fertility hurdles. Fortunately, the best of both worlds in the field of reproductive medicine are merging in an effort to offer patients an integrative, holistic and balanced approach to their reproductive challenges.  Chinese Medicine has been addressing female and male reproductive issues for centuries and contains the first written literature discussing treatment of reproductive disorders utilizing Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine in conjunction with Chinese Medical Dietary Therapy.

Today, this ancient, yet, time proven medicine is being used in conjunction with western Wester Reproductive Medical knowledge, diagnostics and procedures yielding outstanding results not only with improving fertility markers, but also with enhancing patient’s overall health.  This 360 degree approach offers Denver patient’s the most thorough support possible.

This Blog will discuss 3 modalities Used within Chinese Medicine to optimize fertility potential: Chinese Herbal Medicine, Acupuncture, Dietary & Nutritional Therapy.

The Use of Chinese Herbal Medicine and Acupuncture

  • Chinese Herbal Medicine in conjunction with Acupuncture, have been utilized to help women overcome fertility issues for centuries. Recently, specific herbs have been clinically shown to help reduce blockage in the fallopian tubes and fibroids in the uterus. Also, Chinese Herbal Medicine used in accordance with each phase of women’s menstrual cycle, not only helps to regulate women’s menstrual cycles, but also nourishes and encourages healthy ovarian follicle growth and maturation.  The ovarian follicles contain the eggs that will potentially be ovulated each month. Also, the developing ovarian follicles  at the beginning of each month (days 5-10 +/-) is the primary source of a woman’s estrogen production.  A woman must produce enough estrogen in the first part of her cycle in order to produce a healthy and effective ovulation.  Therefore, adequate growth and development of ovarian follicles plays one of the key roles in healthy reproductive potential, as well as, viable pregnancies.

Research has also shown that both acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine influences hormonal pathways, and assists our own internal energies to restore endocrine balance. Both Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine are associated with meridians (or energy channels) spanning the body which are correlated and connected to the internal organs and nerve pathways, thus, they are able to influence the internal organs, the reproductive organs, as well as, influence the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis, which is responsible for ovulation and sperm production. These systems all need to be in balance for optimum reproductive function.

Chinese herbal formulas have been clinically proven to be effective in altering hormone levels in the body. A commonly used formula in the treatment of both infertility and menopause, for example, known as Rhemmania Six, or "Liu Wei Di Huang Wan", alters female sex hormones by directly affecting the adrenal cortex, other endocrine glands, or both.

From a biomedical perspective, this particular formula with or without modifications, has been reported to increase plasma levels of cortisol (our stress-dealing hormone), increase estradiol (an estrogen derivative) and decrease overall FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) and LH (luteinizing hormone). It also was shown to increase estrogen receptors significantly.

Diet & Nutritional Therapy:

  • Diet and Nutrition is one area that many people neglect when considering the possible underlying causes for one's fertility issues. Optimal nutrition can help support conception by improving the reproductive health of both the potential Mother and Father, so it’s a key element that those dealing with reproductive issues must address.

In Summary, Conception and therefore, Pregnancy, occurs when a balanced bodily environment meets with the correct biologic timing.  The Coordination of these two prerequisites can be off in patients suffering from fertility issues.  This is why it is very important to consider a "whole body" approach addressing Fertility and Reproductive issues.  In working towards natural conception, we focus on restoring fertility by restoring proper physiology & functioning of the body as a whole. This is vital for conception to occur.

Research:

  • Lian used Chinese herbs in 60 cases of luteal phase insufficiency. The author recorded a rise in the Basal Body Temperature (BBT) and a 56% successful outcome with over half achieving pregnancy. This modest study suggests that Chinese herbs have a normalizing effect on the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis.
